Hantavirus is unlike COVID-19, patients ‘not posing a great risk’ to others: Expert

A Spanish passenger evacuated from the cruise ship at the centre of a hantavirus outbreak has become the latest to test positive, bringing the total confirmed cases to seven. Madrid's health ministry says the patient is not suffering symptoms. The Spaniard was among those evacuated from the MV Hondius off the Spanish island of Tenerife. Three passengers have died after travelling on the ship, two of whom tested positive for hantavirus. Catherine Bennett, Deakin Distinguished Professor and chair in epidemiology at Deakin University, tells CNA’s Asia First that hantavirus spreads among “really close contacts” and is not airborne like COVID-19.
