Immigration | Uncertainty for refugees seeking shelter in Durban

As government intensifies efforts to enforce immigration laws and repatriate foreign nationals, hundreds of immigrants in Durban remain displaced and afraid of returning to their communities. The refugees, mostly from the Democratic Republic of Congo, fled their communities following anti-immigrant protests and threats targeting foreign nationals.
While Justice and Constitutional Development Minister, Mmamoloko Kubayi, has urged those affected to reintegrate into society, many say they have nowhere safe to return to. About half of the 600 refugees who initially sought shelter outside the Durban Refugee Reception Centre have since left, but those remaining are now seeking shelter at the Sherwood Community Hall.
