Hundreds of young Mexican women juggle for a World Cup opening match ticket

Hundreds of young women across Mexico are competing for a ticket to the opening match of the 2026 World Cup, after President Claudia Sheinbaum announced she would give away her seat to a deserving female football fan. More than 750 contestants have submitted one-minute videos of themselves juggling a football, with average ticket prices running into thousands of dollars and well beyond the reach of most fans. Participants say the contest is also shining a light on women's football and freestyle disciplines that remain largely in the shadow of the men's game.
