The Supreme Court of Appeal will today hear government's appeal on the 2025 North Gauteng High Court ruling on the R370 Social Relief of Distress Grant introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
In 2025, the High Court found that critical aspects of the grant system were unlawfully designed in a manner that excluded millions of otherwise eligible applicants and declared key provisions unconstitutional and invalid.
However, the State argues that it is unaffordable and the system was designed as a temporary COVID-19 relief and not a permanent basic income grant.
