Discovery Insure reports sharp drop in fuel spending

South Africans spent 35 percent less on fuel in April compared to March 2026. That's according to data released by Discovery Insure, which can track its clients' fuel spending and other motor-related issues.

The insurer attributed the massive decrease in spend to the higher fuel costs, which saw petrol prices rise by R3,06 a litre and diesel by R5,27 cents a litre. This was despite relief provided by National Treasury through cutting the general fuel levy by R3 a litre for both fuels. On top of this, Discovery Insure also saw a decline in the number of trips taken during the month.
