“Questionnaire” U.S. sent its allies is offensive & invites rejection | Daniel Fried

The Pentagon sent questionnaires to allied capitals, expecting answers regarding their support for U.S. policy toward Iran, limitations applied by countries hosting U.S. bases on their use in the Middle East conflict, and how much U.S.-manufactured weapons are being bought. These are information is easily available. So what is the questionnaire’s purpose?

“This questionnaire looks like you're asking for a ‘no.’ (...) It just seems to me an attempt to demonstrate power rather than convince countries to work with us,” Daniel Fried, former U.S. Ambassador to Poland, told TVP World. “It’s simply bad practice.”

“It either was put together in a clumsy fashion, or it was intended mischievously to solicit a negative result. So you could take that as proof that the allies are useless, which is what some people in the Trump administration think,” Fried said, but added that: “Happily, there are better people in the Trump administration who believe in the alliance, believe in the West”

At the same time, the alliance had conducted large-scale air exercises with significant U.S. presence in the vicinity of Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave, wedged between Washington’s NATO allies, Poland and Lithuania.

“To me, that’s the best news of the week. This is a signal to the Kremlin that the U.S. is not pulling out of NATO. It’s not withdrawing its forces. It’s not going to accept Russian aggression lying down,” Fried commented. “I’m glad NATO is doing it. It came as a most welcome surprise after a lot of other news, which was less good.”
