Swine fever outbreak

The small-scale pig-farming community in Ugie in the Eastern Cape is raising concerns over an outbreak of African Swine Fever.

Residents in Jusefu say large numbers of pigs have been dying, while some farmers are slaughtering their animals before they develop symptoms of the disease.

Farmers are increasingly worried about their livelihoods, as many depend on livestock farming as a source of income.

They are calling on government to intervene urgently, contain the outbreak and prevent the further spread of African Swine Fever in the region.
