It seems that Europe today finds itself in a growing strategic bind – still reliant on the United States for security, yet struggling to manage its economic ties with China under mounting transatlantic pressure. From Washington's "good vs. bad" NATO allies narrative to Brussels sanctioning Chinese entities and Beijing's swift retaliation, these are not isolated events but symptoms of deeper structural tensions. Has Europe, in effect, created its own strategic dilemma? Can it move toward genuine autonomy in security and foreign policy? And what is holding it back from improving ties with Beijing?
Guests in this episode of Dialogue are Zhao Hai, director of International Political Studies at the National Institute for Global Strategy; Prof. Iain Begg at the London School of Economics and Political Science; and Prof. Glenn Diesen at the University of South-Eastern Norway.
