UN condemns xenophobic attacks in South Africa

In a statement in which he also extended warm greetings to mark South Africa's Freedom Day, António Guterres said that violence, vigilantism, and all forms of incitement to hatred had no place in an inclusive, democratic society governed by the rule of law and respect for human rights.

Xenophobia has long been an issue in South Africa and has been accompanied by occasional outbursts of deadly violence.

Recently, President Cyril Ramaphosa said that the country should never allow the legitimate concerns of communities about illegal migration to breed prejudice towards fellow Africans.
