Ever wondered what you’d actually need in a go bag? We sent our writer and tester, Alex Rennie, out into the field for a true 24-hour experiment with nothing but the gear in his bag. He spent the day and night outside, putting everything to the test to see what actually worked when he couldn’t rely on the comforts of home.

The goal was simple: figure out what was useful, what fell short and what he wished he had. After 24 hours, we rebuilt the bag from the ground up. Here’s what made the cut — and what we’d actually pack in a go bag.
