Moldova has begun formal negotiations to join the European Union, but the separatist region of Transnistria remains its biggest territorial challenge.
The Russian-backed enclave has existed outside Chișinău’s control since 1992 and still hosts Russian troops and a huge Soviet-era ammunition depot.
