Child maintenance | Women abandon claims amid system frustrations

A growing number of women are abandoning child maintenance claims, saying the system meant to protect them is instead leaving them frustrated and financially strained.

A University of Fort Hare study among women found that mothers often face lengthy court processes, unsympathetic officials and situations where fathers claims of financial hardship are accepted without proper verification.

Non-Profit Organisation, Women for Change says there is also widespread confusion about how the system works, leaving many women feeling helpless and giving up on their claims.
