Crime in Westbury | Taking a stand against killings and shootings - Sakina Kamwendo reports

Last year, six teenagers were shot, with two fatally wounded, in an incident in Westbury, Johannesburg, in what was seen as a gang-related crime. This is one of the many crime incidents that have caused public outcry here in Westbury, a suburb described as one of the country's most crime-riddled areas.

According to the Crime Statistics for the April 2025–March 2026, the Sophia Town Police Station covering surrounding suburbs, including Westbury, 4,148 crimes were reported in the April 2025 to March 2026 period, including 1,127 violent crimes and 569 property crimes. 79 murders were reported.

The most frequently reported crime in Sophiatown is drug-related crime, with 1204 cases reported in Apr 2025–Mar 2026. To highlight the crime crisis, the community of Westbury will later this morning gather here at the Mabaleng Open Grounds in Westbury in a hope to voice their concerns about the crime that has impacted their suburb.
