US President Donald Trump says he has agreed to hold off on a planned military strike against Iran, provided a deal is reached to curb Tehran's nuclear programme, and to reopen the strait of Hormuz.

The announcement comes amid renewed diplomatic efforts by Gulf states, including Oman.

In a Truth Social post, Trump said Iran, and several Middle Eastern countries had requested time to finalise an agreement, adding that the US and Israel would cancel a planned attack, if Iran moved quickly to make a deal.

But Iran says there are currently no direct talks with Washington; it says discussions are only taking place with Oman, and are focused on agreeing on a safe shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz.

The Strait carrys around a fifth of the world's oil and liquified natural gas (LNG) supplies, making any disruption a major concern for global energy markets.
