Freedom Day 2026 | Cape Town residents gripped by crime and violence

The Cape Crime Crisis Coalition has described the current moment as a definitive time for action and for mobilisation for justice, peace and equality in South Africa.

Speaking at the launch of the New Freedom Campaign in marking Freedom Day at St George's Cathedral in Cape Town, the coalition's Dr Llewellyn MacMaster says that the violence, which is crippling areas across the Cape Flats where gangsterism, extortion and mass murders occur daily, must end with community mobilisation.

The campaign is a collective effort of interfaith-based communities.
