Freedom Day 2026 | Kimberley pensioners say freedom's promise has faded

Some pensioners in Kimberley, who lived through the apartheid era and were part of the transition of 1994 into democracy, say the euphoria of attaining freedom has worn off and they are now facing the harsh realities of survival.

Three Kimberley pensioners, who all voted for the first time on April 27, 1994, say they had high hopes about the new dispensation.

They have called on political leaders to recommit themselves to leading with integrity and honesty.
