An F-35B Lightning II fighter jet crashed near Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego, California, on Friday morning, erupting into flames and sending thick smoke into the sky.
The pilot ejected safely and was recovered, authorities said.
The aircraft, assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 11, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, went down short of the runway.
Airport fire crews sprayed the wreckage with firefighting foam and worked to extinguish a grass fire surrounding the crash site. The cause of the crash was not immediately clear.
