Russian “empire is dying,” says Kasparov

As Russia’s war against Ukraine grinds on, the conflict is exposing deeper weaknesses within the Russian state. Could Russia’s war against Ukraine ultimately hasten the collapse of the empire Putin is so desperately trying to preserve?

“I think the Empire is dying. And I think during our lifetime we’ll see the end of the Russian Empire,” Garry Kasparov, Russian grand chess master and Chairman of the Renew Democracy Initiative, told TVP World, adding that he does not expect the Kremlin to be able to maintain its current borders any longer than 10 years, and that he hopes it will be less than that.

“People ask me: “Do you want Russia to collapse?” It’s not about what I want or not. It’s going to happen,” he said

Kasparov warned, however, that Putin may decide to take desperate steps when faced with the prospect of loss of power amid the collapse. And the Russian people themselves might follow him.

“Talk to a population that have been brainwashed for decades. Try to listen to Russian propaganda for three days, and even for you, it will be difficult. They are not attacking; they are defending,” he explained. “They will not be attacking NATO countries. They’ll be attacking countries that are supporting Ukraine's aggression against Russia.”

“It sounds ridiculous for us, for normal people in Poland, in Germany, but for many, many Russians, it’s the story,” the Renew Democracy Initiative chairman concluded.

Kasparov said that his goal is to explain to Western politicians how the Russians, and Putin, think, and to come together to defend their values and ideally deter him.

“And I will do absolutely everything to build as strong a coalition as possible, to make sure that Putin’s aggression will never succeed,” he said.

But ultimately, to ensure lasting peace, Russia must change, and, as Kasparov said: “Victory for Ukraine is the only chance for change in Russia.”
