From China's construction boom to an AI future. The Business presenter Alicia Barry sat down with Simon Trott, who says investment in data centres will hit $US1 trillion and will require a lot of the company's copper, steel, aluminium, and lithium. His big pitch to investors is we're not just about iron ore, (although it's still the biggest contributor to earnings), but that Rio Tinto can supply most of the required materials for the big tech data centre infrastructure boom. He says demand for copper in particular will be significant into the future, as it will be needed across all the world's economies in terms of driving electrification. Speaking to The Business following the release of the company's half-year results, the mining giant's chief executive says the company is on track for a 50 per cent reduction in scope one and two emissions by 2030. Mr Trott says one of the biggest tasks will be repowering its aluminium smelters in Australia. "It'll be one of the largest transitions like that around the world...we've got partnerships right around the world to work with our customers to make sure that we're supplying the products they need so that they're able to decarbonise their own operations, too," he says.
