Putin misunderstood the red-carpet treatment Trump gave him in Alaska | News In Depth

U.S. President Donald Trump has over the past months radically shifted his attitude toward Ukraine, with the pivot widely interpreted as an attempt to cash in on Kyiv’s recent battlefield successes as midterms approach and the war against Iran seems nowhere close to ending. Meanwhile, fears that Russia’s Vladimir Putin will easily manipulate Trump into handing Ukraine over to him failed to materialize. Was it ever possible? Or has Putin just missed his chance?

“Trump miscalculated his ability to lure Putin in with business deals and improving bilateral relations, not realizing how deeply Putin is in bed with the Chinese, with the Iranians,” said Adam Jasser, TVP World’s News Director. “And Putin miscalculated, or he took Trump’s gestures: the red carpet in Alaska, refusing to condemn him as a war criminal, all these nice things he said about Putin— too literally, not realizing that Trump’s real objective was to finish the war and do some kind of a deal.”

“And so Putin miscalculated by offering absolutely nothing in Alaska,” he said, adding that in subsequent months Europe ramped up its own rearmament and support from Ukraine after the U.S. disengagement. “Strategically, Putin is the loser. But he's also a cornered animal. And he’s very dangerous.”

Putin appears to still hope that Europe’s support for Ukraine will crumble if enough European elections deliver power to parties less sympathetic to Ukraine.

“Well, we’ve seen from experience that he’s been hoping for that for the past four years,” Jasser said. “Well, he’s still not there.”
