The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry has turned its attention to allegations involving the misuse of Crime Intelligence secret service funds and the role of the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption, or IDAC, in probing those claims.
Former IDAC head Advocate Andrea Johnson faced intense questioning before the commission, where she was pressed to explain what became of allegations contained in a Section 27 referral affidavit submitted by National Coloured Congress leader and Member of Parliament Fadiel Adams.
The affidavit alleged that money was unlawfully withdrawn from the South African Police Service's secret Crime Intelligence slush fund and paid directly to former Police Minister Bheki Cele.
Under cross-examination, Johnson acknowledged that she could not say with certainty whether IDAC ever pursued a formal investigation into the allegations.
She told the commission that she did not follow up on the matter before leaving her position with immediate effect earlier this week.
