Immigration Crisis | Authorities working to speed up verification: Leon Schreiber

Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber says efforts to repatriate thousands of Malawian nationals from Durban are gaining momentum, with verification processes accelerating.

More than 7000 Malawian nationals have already been deported, while over 8000 others are still undergoing screening before being returned to their home country.

Government has stepped up logistics, deploying additional buses to transport those cleared for repatriation from Durban to Malawi via the Beitbridge Border Post.

The operation is being carried out in coordination with the Malawian High Commission and private sector partners.

Meanwhile, to address overcrowding, the eThekwini Municipality has opened a second temporary shelter.

Schreiber says authorities are also working closely with police to verify whether any of those being processed have pending criminal cases, or links to criminal activity in South Africa before they are repatriated.
