A Supreme Court judge has upheld a suppression order preventing the publication of the name of a high-profile married man linked to an alleged extortion attempt.

Justice James Henry rejected arguments made by media lawyers that a magistrate has gone beyond her power in suppressing the name of the man, who is neither a witness nor victim of the alleged extortion attempt.

The man's name will remain prohibited from publication, while the extortion case proceeds through the Cairns Magistrates Court.
