Rosatom fallout: The Russian giant Europe is afraid to sanction | Daniel Czyżewski

Germany has approved a controversial nuclear fuel project involving Russian technology, despite the European Union's efforts to reduce its dependence on Moscow. The decision comes as imports of Russian LNG and enriched uranium into the EU have risen this year, raising fresh questions about whether Europe's energy security strategy matches its political ambitions. “The West remains too dependent on Russian components, technology and enriched uranium to cut ties completely in the short term,” says Daniel Czyżewski, energy analyst at the Polska z Natury Foundation, in World Talks.

According to Czyżewski, replacing Russian nuclear technology is far more complicated than replacing Russian gas or coal. While alternatives exist, establishing the necessary facilities and fuel supply chains can take years. He argues that the European Union has not invested enough – politically or financially – in reducing its dependence on Rosatom and the broader Russian nuclear industry.
