U.S. President Donald Trump is rocking the boat with his tariffs again, threatening to start a new trade war with Europe – this time, claiming European countries are not doing enough to counter the practice of forced labor – a claim all the more puzzling, considering the robustness of labor laws across on the continent, especially when compared to workers’ protection in the U.S. The real reason, however, is likely the EU fining Google over numerous unfair trade practices that benefited the company at the expense of its users.
As usual in such cases, the question always is: Who benefits?
“A disunited West is a gift for a united East, I think is clearly the answer to that question,” said Alex Cadier, TVP World’s Chief International Correspondent. “China will be looking at this with some level of delight and relish, because you have some of the two biggest trading economic superpowers in the world, the United States and the European Union, fighting each other on the enforcement of European laws.”
Cadier said that Trump has repeatedly threatened to heap more tariffs on EU goods, but these ended up not materializing. But should they come into effect, the EU may have no option but retaliate, which will effectively hurt businesses on both sides of the Atlantic.
“Tariff war between the EU and the U.S., seemingly a lose-lose for the U.S. and Europe. Not so much for China, Russia and Iran,” said TVP World’s Chief International Correspondent.
Join News in Depth’s host Maciej Mikos and his guest as they explore why Norway, not even an EU member, was among the countries against which Trump levelled the “absurd” claim of using forced labor, what will it take for the EU to be pushed to finally retaliate, and what benefit, if any, may Trump see in his latest tariff gambit.
