State ready to prosecute 62 accused of July 2021 unrest

The state says it's ready to prosecute the 62 people accused of orchestrating the deadly July 2021 unrest.

The trial was scheduled to run from 20 July to 18 September, but has seen frequent postponements.

The unrest in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, claimed about 350 lives, and caused about R50 billion worth of damage to the economy.

Ongoing delays over legal representation continue to stall one of South Africa's biggest criminal trials.

The group faces charges including incitement to commit public violence, terrorism and conspiracy to commit murder. They remain out on bail under strict conditions.
