The U.S. has bigger leverage over Russia than Europe | News in Depth

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has written an open letter to Vladimir Putin, proposing direct talks. “Zelenskyy is trying to take the initiative in the peace process,” Stuart Dowell, Political Editor at TVP World, said on News in Depth. Ukraine is pushing to restart negotiations in an effort to end the “hot phase” of the war before winter. Europe is expected to play an increasingly important role in potential talks. However, Dowell argues that Europe has very limited leverage over Russia – unlike the United States. “The most likely scenario is neither full peace nor endless war, but a frozen conflict,” he added. According to Dowell, this is due to unresolved territorial disputes and Vladimir Putin’s political inability to accept a compromise.
