Nineteen people have been sentenced over a baby-trafficking scheme that bought newborns from vulnerable families in Indonesia and sent some of them to adoptive parents in Singapore.

The verdict has renewed attention on the financial pressures that can leave families vulnerable.

Dewi, a mother of four, told the ABC she once gave up her newborn son for about $400 during a period of severe hardship, before eventually being reunited with him.

Indonesia's child protection commissioner says known cases of illegal adoption and baby-trafficking may be only the "tip of the iceberg".
