South China Sea confrontations complicate Code of Conduct negotiations, says analyst

ASEAN foreign ministers welcomed "significant progress" in negotiations on a long-awaited Code of Conduct for the South China Sea and expressed hope that talks could be concluded by the end of the year, even as renewed tensions flared in the disputed waterway during the Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Manila.

Speaking to CNA’s Asia First, Andreyka Natalegawa, associate fellow at the Southeast Asia Program at Washington-based research institute Center for Strategic and International Studies, discusses how recent confrontations in the contested waterway showcase the gap between diplomatic negotiations and continued tensions at sea.
