Officers appear in court on extortion charges

Nine law enforcement officers have appeared at the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court today.

The six JMPD officers, two SAPS and 1 traffic warden were arrested around Gauteng on Wednesday for allegedly extorting money from people during an unlawful search at a Crown Mines warehouse.

The officers reportedly threatened a person with arrest over expired hair dye, and demanded cash.

Investigations revealed that the officers, including some who were off duty, conducted the search outside their jurisdiction.

The case has been postponed to the 28 of April for formal bail application with all nine, remanded in custody.
