Concerns continue to mount around the deaths of initiates in some parts of the country. Forty-five initiates have died nationwide, with Mpumalanga accounting for 18 of the deaths and the Eastern Cape the death toll is at 14.

Fifty eight illegal initiation schools have been shut down, forty suspects arrested and a 116 criminal cases opened.


There are 15 initiation-related abductions that have been recorded, twelve of these are in Gauteng while 3 are in Mpumalanga.
