Mxenge Inquest | Court closes reopened probe into 1981 killing

The KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Pietermaritzburg has closed the reopened inquest into the 1981 killing of human rights lawyer, Griffiths Mxenge.

It was the first time in South Africa's legal history that an inquest was reopened after a trial court had already convicted the accused.

Judge Pieter Bezuidenhout had earlier asked legal teams to address the court on whether it would be permissible to hear further evidence following a criminal trial.

In 1997, members of the security police's Vlakplaas unit were convicted for Mxenge's murder.

He was stabbed to death in Umlazi, south of Durban.
