ANC–SACP clash over dual membership rule

A historic shift is unfolding within South Africa's liberation movement, as the South African Communist Party confirms it will contest the 2026 local government elections independently, setting up an unprecedented electoral showdown with its long-time ally, the African National Congress. For decades, the Tripartite Alliance — made up of the ANC, SACP, and Congress of South African Trade Unions, has been a cornerstone of the country's political landscape. But with tensions now spilling into open political competition, questions are mounting about whether this alliance can survive in its current form. To unpack all of this, I am now joined by Professor Susan Booysen - Author and Emeritus Professor Wits University and Mbhazima Shilowa - former member of both the ANC and SACP.
