Unresolved suspensions cost government R1bn: PSA

South Africa's public service is under scrutiny after the Public Servants Association revealed that government has spent more than R1 billion over the past five years on employees placed on prolonged paid suspensions. The issue has been placed in the spotlight by recent high profile suspensions, including that of National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola and senior metro police officials such as suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi. These cases have reignited concerns about governance failures, accountability gaps, and the mounting financial burden on taxpayers, while critical public services continue to suffer.
