Tribal Authority welcomes home over 300 initiates

More than 40 initiates have lost their lives during South Africa's 2026 winter initiation season, raising fresh concerns over the safety of one of the country's oldest cultural traditions.

But amid the grim national statistics, one traditional authority in Gauteng is offering a different story.

The Ingoma Yako Somgulatshana Tribal Authority in Bapsfontein has successfully welcomed home more than 300 initiates, recording zero deaths and no major incidents.

Traditional leaders credit strict oversight, medical support, and close collaboration with government for ensuring every initiate returned home safely.
