Finnish FM: Russia does not believe its own NATO propaganda | Elina Valtonen

Does Russia not even believe its own propaganda about the “NATO threat”? Russian troop numbers near Finland’s border are at their lowest level in decades, despite our country's accession to the Alliance, says Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen.

Speaking on World Talks, Valtonen also argued that Europe is capable of taking greater responsibility for its own security, although strengthening defense capabilities and expanding the defense industry will take time. She also commented on potential Russia–Ukraine peace talks. “We need a broad European mandate,” she said in the context of negotiations and sanctions against the aggressor.

The Finnish foreign minister further stated that disagreements between Donald Trump and some European leaders do not threaten NATO’s cohesion, although she acknowledged that the U.S. president’s style of communication differs from what European partners are accustomed to. She also expressed hope for a lasting peace in the Middle East.
