In a surprise move last week, U.S. President Donald Trump floated the idea of licensing the manufacture of Patriot interceptor missiles to Ukraine. While the details of such a deal remain to be honed out, the announcement raised some hopes among Ukraine’s allies, chiefly regarding Washington’s posture toward Kyiv and Moscow. But can the Patriots change the course of the war?
“The licensing approval is the first step in a long process of eventually producing Patriots. So factories have to be opened, labor force recruited, supply chains secured, and so forth,” Douglas Lute, International and Defense Chair at BGR Group and former U.S. Ambassador to NATO, told TVP World, pointing out that even the U.S. manufacturer of Patriots is currently struggling to meet the demand, which has spiked due to the war with Iran.
“So this is not a panacea. This is not a quick win for Ukraine,” Lute added, while also pointing out that “Putin cannot be happy with the outcome of the Ankara summit, in part because of this licensing, which, while it doesn’t produce a quick win for Ukraine, very much signals that the U.S. is investing in Ukraine's future.”
Join Aaron Dahmen, in his final interview conducted for TVP World, and his guest, as they explore what impact the reshuffle of the Ukrainian government may have on the war effort, whether Trump’s pressure on allies to up their defense spending ultimately strengthens or damages NATO’s cohesion, and what Vladimir Putin must be thinking, reading the latest briefings.
