The war in Ukraine was supposed to last three days. Four years later, it continues to reshape Europe’s security landscape.
In this edition of Control Room: Brussels, Grzegorz Nawrocki is joined by Hannah Neumann, Member of the European Parliament (Greens/EFA, Germany), Pekka Toveri, former Major General and now Member of the European Parliament (EPP, Finland), and Major General Enno Mõts, Military Representative of Estonia to NATO, to examine Russia’s war, NATO’s readiness, Europe’s defense capabilities, and the risks facing the Alliance’s eastern flank.
“Rather than investing a lot of mental energy into understanding what Putin may or may not do, we need to do our homework,” says Hannah Neumann, calling for stronger European resilience against hybrid attacks and disinformation.
Pekka Toveri delivers a stark warning: “We are in a hurry,” pointing to military assessments that Europe may have as little as two years to strengthen its defenses and deterrence capabilities.
Looking beyond the battlefield, Major General Enno Mõts warns that the security risks will not disappear with a peace deal. “The question is, even after whatever peace agreement, what will happen to those thousands and thousands of Russian war veterans?” he asks, highlighting the long-term consequences of the conflict for Europe.
Can Putin afford to lose this war? Can Europe afford to be unprepared?
