Urszula Gacek argued that the EU’s new defense partnership with Ukraine is a major step because Europe has become a more dependable long-term partner than the United States, while Ukraine brings invaluable battlefield experience and cutting-edge drone technology that can strengthen European defense. She said Ukraine’s path to EU membership is still moving forward, but warned that growing political tensions—especially over the Volhynia massacres—have weakened public support in Poland and turned Warsaw’s backing into conditional support rather than automatic advocacy.

Gacek stressed that Poland is unlikely to block Ukraine’s EU accession outright, but believes Warsaw will use its leverage to push Kyiv to confront unresolved historical issues before membership is approved. She also argued that disputes over Ukrainian grain exports can be solved through transitional arrangements similar to those used when Poland joined the EU, without denying Ukraine full membership.

Looking ahead, Gacek expects Ukraine to join the EU before the often-cited 10–15 year timeline, although she believes Moldova could become a member first because its accession process is simpler and unaffected by war.
