The US Iran conflict has helped fast track a trend already underway in the car market - the rise of electric vehicles. According to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries 23.6 per cent of vehicle sales in June in Australia were EVs. That means one in four buyers drove an EV out of the showroom in the month. That's up from 7.6 per cent the same time a year ago. Chinese brands are leading the charge, BYD sales nationally came a very close second to Toyota in the month. Breaking down the national figures, BYD beat Toyota sales in Victoria and Queensland. Steve Bragg, lead partner at Pitcher Partner told The Business, that with few trade barriers, Australia has one of the highest penetrations of Chinese brands in the western world. "There's ten OEM's with 20 plus brands and a dozen or more so coming so Australia's market has over 80 brands." More than 25% of all cars sold in 2026 so far were made by a Chinese brand name like BYD. He expects it's very likely that the penetration of Chinese brands will hit 50 per cent.
