Discussion | Parental rights as a father

For many children, a father's presence is more than just a relationship, it is a source of love, guidance, identity and belonging. But what happens when that relationship is broken, not by choice, but through conflict, lengthy legal processes or circumstances that keep parents apart?

The African Transformation Movement has called on Parliament to investigate what it describes as a growing crisis of fathers being denied meaningful access to their children. The call has reignited an important national conversation about children's best interests, parental responsibilities, the family justice system and whether more can be done to ensure children maintain healthy relationships with both parents where it is safe and appropriate.

This afternoon, we explore these issues from the perspectives of policy, fatherhood and lived experience.

Joining us is African Transformation Movement spokesperson, Zama Ntshona, Craig Wilkinson, who is an advocate for positive masculinity, fatherhood, gender equality and leadership and we hear from a father who has asked to remain anonymous as he shares his personal experience of being separated from his children.
