Parliament's Select Committee on Cooperative Governance and Public Administration says the Impendle municipality in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands is in a state of despair, and will deteriorate without an urgent financial recovery plan.
This concern was expressed by committee chair, Mxolisi Kaunda, during an oversight visit on Friday, following a decision by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs to implement a constitutional intervention in the municipality, to restore effective governance, financial management, and accountability.
The municipality is amongst seven in the province affected by National Treasury's decision to temporarily withhold the July 2026 equitable share allocation.
