Powerful Typhoon Bavi is approaching the southwestern region of Japan

A large and powerful typhoon is approaching a remote chain of islands in Japan's southwest.

Authorities are warning of high waves, strong winds and rain, with Typhoon Bavi expected to pass to the north of Taiwan, before moving onto China's eastern coast.
