Why boarding schools matter: A veteran teacher's 30 years in Xizang

In Southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region, teaching has long extended beyond the classroom.

For decades, scattered villages, vast distances, and harsh terrain meant teachers often traveled with herdsmen during seasonal migrations, pitching tents as makeshift classrooms to keep lessons going.

One of those teachers is Thondup Drolma.

Today, at more than 4,000 meters above sea level, her daily routine offers insight into how boarding schools have transformed education for children in remote pastoral regions.
