Europe pushes Trump to re-commit to NATO in Ankara summit | Morning Report

NATO members are convening on day two of the annual leaders’ summit in Ankara, Turkey. On this final day of the summit, European leaders aim to persuade U.S. President Donald Trump to re-commit to the defense organization, after his revived disputes with them over the Iran war and Greenland. NATO chief Mark Rutte has said the allies must assure that Russia and China do not gain greater access to the Arctic on account of its strategic significance.

- DOORSTEP REMARKS
Earlier this morning, Poland’s President Karol Nawrocki delivered doorstep remarks ahead of the second day of the NATO summit in Ankara. Nawrocki says that he has come to the NATO summit to raise three strategic points – to strengthen solidarity within the alliance, to build transatlantic relations, and to affirm that Russia remains NATO’s primary threat.

- U.S. AIRSTRIKES AGAINST IRAN
The U.S. military says it has carried out airstrikes against Iran in response to renewed attacks by Tehran on commercial shipping. It is the most serious escalation in tensions between the two sides since the most recent ceasefire. The U.S. decision to attack Iran was made after President Donald Trump arrived in Ankara on Tuesday to attend the NATO summit taking place this week.
