China and the Nordics: Pragmatism in a time of uncertainty

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, also a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, is wrapping up a week-long tour of Northern Europe, with stops in Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Norway. It is the first visit by a Chinese foreign minister to Denmark in 15 years and to Sweden in 22 years. The trip comes as Europe grapples with trade frictions with China, the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and growing uncertainty over its relationship with the United States. It also coincides with this week's NATO summit in Ankara. All four countries on Wang Yi's itinerary are NATO members, while Denmark, Sweden and Finland are also members of the European Union. Against this backdrop, can the Nordic countries help stabilize China-Europe relations amid mounting geopolitical pressure? And beyond the handshakes and diplomatic language, what concrete outcomes has the visit delivered?
