South Africa and Lesotho officially unveiled the Senqu Bridge on Wednesday. This occassion marked a landmark achievement under Phase II of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP). The LHWP is a multi-phased, binational infrastructure initiative established in terms of the 1986 Treaty between the two countries, as well as the Phase II Agreement concluded in 2011.
The project will also facilitate the transfer of high-quality water to South Africa; generate hydropower for Lesotho; and support the provision of potable water, irrigation, fisheries, and the promotion of tourism.
