Suspect linked to R14m precious stones theft hands himself over

A Killarney-based businessman has handed himself over to the Edenvale police station in connection with the 2023 alleged theft of precious metals and stones worth R14.9 million.

He is the second suspect to be arrested in the matter, after IPID arrested an Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department officer on Friday night.

The pair will appear on Monday before the Johannesburg Magistrate court.

The arrests follow testimony at the Madlanga Commission, where Witness K alleged that she, suspended EMPD Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi and four others raided an apartment in Killarney, Johannesburg and removed the metals in February 2023.
