Dicussion | PSA opposing a move by the Department of Labour to cancel its trade union registration

The Department of Employment and Labour has issued a notice of its intention to cancel the registration of the Public Servants Association of South Africa (PSA), one of the country's largest public sector unions, representing over 245 000 public servants, making it the country's third-largest public sector union.

Citing provisions of the Labour Relations Act, the Registrar says the PSA is allegedly not a genuine trade union, cannot function in terms of a compliant constitution, and has failed to meet key governance and reporting requirements.

The union now has 60 days to respond before a final decision is made.

The move has also raised wider governance questions, including the future of the PSA's representation on the Public Investment Corporation (PIC) board.
