Discussion | South African households brace for the latest electricity tariff hikes

From 1 July, millions of South Africans began paying more for electricity after municipal tariffs increased, adding further pressure to already stretched household budgets.

For many families, the challenge is no longer load shedding, but simply being able to afford electricity.

The latest increases have also renewed questions about why electricity tariffs differ from one municipality to another, why some households pay significantly more than others, and whether enough is being done to protect low-income consumers from rising energy costs?

To unpack the impact of the latest tariff hikes and what can be done to make electricity more affordable, we are joined by Executive Director of the Southern African Faith Communities' Environment Institute (SAFCEI), Francesca de Gasparis, and Programme Coordinator of the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group (PMBEJD), Mervyn Abrahams.
